Cedar Fence Board Buying Guide

Choosing the right cedar fence boards ensures a durable, attractive fence that stands up to Saskatchewan weather.

Grade

For fencing, Select Tight Knot (STK) is the most common choice — it offers good appearance and value. Clear Cedar is available for premium fence projects. Cottage Grade works for utility fencing where appearance is less critical.

Dimensions

Common fence board dimensions:

  • 1x4 — narrower boards, more frequent gaps
  • 1x6 — the most common width for privacy fencing
  • 1x8 — wider boards, fewer gaps

Board thickness is typically 3/4" (nominal 1x).

Spacing

For privacy fencing, boards are installed with minimal or no spacing. For decorative fencing, spacing of 1/2" to 1" is common. Consider wind load when choosing spacing — tighter spacing catches more wind.

Installation Tips

  • Use cedar posts for consistency and rot resistance
  • Stain or seal boards before installation for complete coverage
  • Allow boards to acclimate before installation to minimize movement
