Step-by-step guide to building a cedar raised garden box — materials, dimensions, and assembly.
How To Build A Cedar Raised Garden Box
Cedar is the preferred material for raised garden boxes because it's naturally resistant to rot and safe for food-contact applications — no chemical treatment needed.
Materials
- Cedar boards (1x6 or 2x6 for sides)
- Cedar posts (4x4 for corners)
- Deck screws or nails
- Landscape fabric (optional)
Dimensions
A common raised bed is 4' wide by 8' long, with 12" to 18" depth. Keep width to 4' or less so you can reach the center from either side.
Steps
- Cut your boards — two 8' sides and two 4' ends (adjust to your dimensions)
- Assemble the frame — attach boards to corner posts using screws
- Position the box — place on level ground, remove grass if needed
- Line the bottom — optional landscape fabric to prevent weeds
- Fill with soil — use a mix of topsoil, compost, and organic matter
Why Cedar?
Western Red Cedar resists rot naturally, lasts for years in ground contact, and is safe for growing food. Unlike pressure treated lumber, cedar doesn't rely on chemical treatment for durability.
