Clear, Select Tight Knot, Cottage Grade, and Rough Cut — understand the differences and choose the right grade for your project.
Cedar Grades Explained
Western Red Cedar is available in several grades, each suited to different applications and budgets. Understanding the differences helps you choose the right material for your project.
Clear Cedar
Clear Cedar is the highest grade, free of knots. It's ideal for visible applications where appearance matters — siding, trim, feature walls, and furniture. It machines cleanly and holds finish well.
Select Tight Knot (STK)
STK cedar has tight, sound knots that are stable and won't fall out. It offers a balance of appearance and value, making it a popular choice for fencing, decking, and general-purpose projects.
Cottage Grade
Cottage Grade includes larger knots and some imperfections. It's a cost-effective option for projects where appearance is less critical — garden structures, rough fencing, and utility applications.
Rough Cut
Rough Cut cedar has an unfinished, textured surface. It's used for rustic applications, timbers, and projects where a natural, unfinished look is desired.
Which Grade Should You Choose?
- Clear Cedar — visible, high-end applications
- STK — general-purpose, good value
