Selecting the right cedar deck boards — dimensions, grades, spacing, and finishing for a durable deck.
How To Choose Cedar Deck Boards
Choosing the right cedar deck boards ensures a durable, attractive deck that performs well in Saskatchewan's climate.
Dimensions
Common deck board dimensions:
- 5/4x6 — the most common deck board, 1" thick
- 2x6 — thicker, more substantial feel
- 2x4 — narrower boards, more texture
Grade
- Clear Cedar — premium appearance, ideal for visible decks
- Select Tight Knot (STK) — good value, tight knots are stable
- Free of Box Heart — resists checking and splitting
Spacing
Space deck boards 1/4" apart for drainage and expansion. Cedar moves with moisture changes, so proper spacing prevents buckling.
Finishing
Apply stain or sealer to all sides before installation for complete protection. Re-seal every 2-3 years depending on sun exposure and traffic.
Installation Tips
- Use stainless or coated screws to prevent staining
- Pre-drill at board ends to prevent splitting
- Install with bark side up to reduce cupping
- Allow boards to acclimate before installation
